Introduction
IT is only in recent years that the practice of giving a name to an express train has become general. True, a few trains have borne names which have appeared in Bradshaw's comprehensive columns, but though they were so known and recognized by the general public, there was no indication on the train itself that it had a name at all. The railways' urgent need for publicity to-day has led them to remedy this omission, and so we see name-boards carried along the roofs of many of the trains that have been distinguished in this way.
There are two sorts of names; shall we call them useful, and ornamental? The first sort tells you pretty concisely where the train is going, more or less; names such as the " Cornish Riviera Limited Express," or the " Irish Mail," have a solid meaning. What shall we say, though, of the second variety, a good example of which is " The Comet ? Or, again, the " Golden Arrow ; high-sounding names both, and well known to their patrons, but they don't give the average traveler much idea as to their destinations.
Let us not be too critical, however; it is the purpose of this book to expound as much as may be possible of these mysteries for the benefit of all, so that the reader may find out all about them and where they go with the minimum of trouble to himself. What is more, we think it will be interesting to make some sort of mention of the places through which they pass, together with a variety of details of the working which make their journeys such safe ones. The " running commentary " is now an established feature in our entertainment, why not carry it out from the windows of a railway train?
