Family Library of Trains, The By Bernie Fitz Simons DJ
The Family Library of Trains By Bernie Fitz Simons Dust Jacket 1981 80 pages indexed
For a hundred years steam locomotives pulled trains of every variety throughout the world. There were long-distance express passenger coaches of great luxury like the Orient Express; massively powerful freight locomotives-the Big Boys-pulling mile-long trains of mineral cars; mixed trains with cargo of every sod, and excursion trains taking ordinary people to the races and the seaside. It is not surprising that for many, steam trains have a certain magic.
But now, in many parts of the world. the eerie moan of the steam whistle has given way to the blast of a mechanical horn. This guide to trains past and present recaptures some of the atmosphere of the steam age now gone. But at the same time it recognizes the sheer power and efficiency of today's diesel and electric locomotives. And when today's railway giants are labouring through mountains with long trains of freight, or speeding between cities at speeds which would have astounded Stephenson, it is clear that they are worthy successors to their steam ancestors.
