Introduction to 1985 Edition
The above words were first written in 1974 as a preface to a small volume entitled The Witney & East Gloucestershire Railway, which sold out very quickly and has been out of print for several years. The basic text of the 'Witney & East Gloucestershire' has been available in the Witney area in a slightly contracted form, but there nevertheless seemed to be scope for a much enlarged edition, incorporating many more photographs and plans. Moreover, new information on the early days of the Witney Railway was researched for the author's M.A. Thesis 'Victorian Witney & Its Railway' (University of Leicester, 1975) and it seemed sensible to include this previously unpublished material in the new edition, together with several previously unpublished plans and diagrams. Although this present history can be seen as a reprint of the 'Witney & East Gloucestershire' (and has taken its place in the new Oakwood list of titles) it is in effect an entirely new book, and in recognition of this fact a new title 'The Fairford Branch' seemed appropriate. It is hoped that this new version will give as much pleasure as its small predecessor.
