The railway - twin ribbons of bright steel stretching to infinity and encircling the globe enjoys a history of more than 15o years. In this time it has had profound effects upon people's way of life and upon the development of continents and national economies.
Before the introduction of the steam locomotive (the factor which really allowed railways to be developed), horse-operated waggonways, and canals and rivers, were the means by which people and goods were moved. The waggonways were the proving ground for the earliest steam locomotives, designed by such men as Richard Trevithick, William Hedley and George Stephenson. At first their designs were so crude and cumbersome that the vehicles had difficulty in remaining on the rough waggonway tracks which then existed, but they persevered, and with time both design and manufacturing methods were improved and basic springing was developed.
So it came about that on 27 September 1825 it was a steam locomotive called Locomotion which hauled the inaugural train on the Stockton & Darlington Railway rather than horses. The railway and the locomotive were both the work of engineer George Stephenson. Despite many breakdowns in service Locomotion proved 30 per cent cheaper than horses for working freight traffic and, as a result, Stephenson and his contemporary engineers were encouraged to continue the development and construction of steam locomotives. This gave added impetus to the development of new railway lines to link important areas of trade and commerce, because the Stockton & Darlington Railway quickly became a profitable concern.
