Description:
The Chicago, South Bend and Northern Indiana Railway Company, or Northern Indiana Railway, was one of several electric interurban railways that once served South Bend and other communities. Chartered January 18, 1885, the South Bend Railway Company operated under several names until June 15, 1940 when the remaining five lines ceased operation. Its lines served Michigan City, LaPorte, the University of Notre Dame, Elkhart, Goshen and Bristol in Indiana. They also ran north into Michigan to provide service to Benton Harbor, St. Joseph and Niles. This definitive history proved a fascinating look at the various electric street railway lines that once tied the region together. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos and a 2-page foldout system map in the back. With bibliography. 244 pages.
