ITRODUCTION & ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
In 1974, Dan R. Bray, Jr., a senior at Elkin High School, wrote a term paper on the subject of Elkin & Alleghany Railway Company. Five years later, he privately printed a booklet with the hope of preserving a bit of Elkin Valley history and as a tribute to the pioneer efforts of Elkin's founding fathers. This booklet provided the majority of the information presented in this text. Dan Bray, Jr., donated his original materials and manuscript to the Elkin Valley Trails Association (EVTA) for the purpose of preserving and sharing this rich history.
This fresh and updated version contains newly discovered information as well as a brief history of the railroad as it pertains to the town of Elkin and northwest North Carolina. The original manuscript acknowledged the following sources that contributed information: Ned Ball, Pauline Billings, Ohna P. Bivins, Clay Blackburn, Dan Bray, Sr., Tom Bray, A.O. Bryan, Button Bryan, Hugh Chatham H, Richard T. Chatham, Ab Crater, Mrs. C.T. Doughton, Mrs. J.K. Doughton, Mrs. R.B. Harrell, Mr. & Mrs. Garr Harris, Mr. & Mrs. "Nux" Harris, Mrs. Raymond Harris, Lin Hendren, Beatrice Holbrook, John Ipock, Arthur Laffoon, Jim Lyon, Montgomery Lyon, Ted Lyon, Mrs. Z.B. Martin, Mrs. J.F. MeNeely, Walter Minish, Pauline Whitaker Moose, Ralph Reich, Paul Shumate, and Louise & Joe Transou.
This revised version wishes to acknowledge and thank the following contributors: Vernon Ball, Ira Billings, Manual Blackburn, Irene Bowen, Kara Bumgarner, Julian Charles, Effie Cochrane, Bobby Colvard, Woodrow Crouse, Joe DeJournette, Jerry Ann Duncan, Mary Ruth Duncan, Charles Fletcher, Dr. John Gambill, Jack & Mary Gentry, Johnny Graybeal, Troy Hall, Wayne Hall, Dr. James A. The mission of the EVTA, an affiliate of NC Rail Trails, is to increase the quality of life in the Elkin Valley by building and promoting a network of trails and greenways. The goal is to provide educational opportunities; preserve area history; promote health and wellness; provide economic opportunities; promote an appreciation and a respect for our environment in Wilkes, Surry and Yadkin counties; and connect with trails that link to the rest of North Carolina. Proceeds from this book will support the E &A Rail Trail, a section of the Stone Mountain Trail and Mountainto-Sea Trail.
Matt Bumgarner, from Hickory, North Carolina, added historical text and photographs to the original manuscript with items from his vast collection. Bumgarner is is one of the foremost railroad historians of western North Carolina, having authored/co-authored more than a half dozen books on Tarheel railroads and the Civil War. He has won numerous awards for his work and is currently a director at the SE Narrow Gauge & Shortline Museum in Newton, NC.
