Foreword
An elementary knowledge of economics is all that is required for an understanding of the important part transportation plays in the development of industry and commerce. This volume presents certain economic principles which are of particular import to transportation. It also describes and illustrates the interrelationships of transportation with other forms of economic activity.
Among the economic principles that have special application in the field of transport and in our complex economic structure are the following: land utilization; division of labor; supply and demand for goods and services; place utility; time utility; pricing of goods; transportation as a cost factor; production and distribution of raw materials; location of industries; and location and supply of markets. These and related subjects are discussed in order that readers may acquire a clearer understanding of the relationships of transportation with the production, manufacture, distribution and consumption of goods and articles of commerce.
For the sake of clarity the illustrations used have been simplified as much as possible. It is hoped that students of transportation, whether in educational institutions or industry, may find in these pages the answers to some of the complex problems which transportation economists are facing.
