Approx 109 pages.
This two-volume Handbook is intended as a reference manual of electrical information required by model railroaders. Volume I contains the basic information needed on all layouts such as Ohm's Law. Volume II, although including more basic information, primarily covers advanced aspects of the hobby such as signals and independent control of several locomotives. Emphasis is heavily on methods which have proven effective, particularly those widely used. Special attention has been given to reliability, for example making throttles self-protecting.
A major change has taken place in locomotive control since 1983, date of the third edition. Then even the most-advanced systems not only could be built by modelers using standard integrated-circuit packages but also they had to be so constructed as commercial systems (for all practical purposes) did not exist. Indeed the first demonstrated computer cab-control system (1971-1979) was constructed entirely of TTL packages including the computer because then-available microprocessors were not fast enough. By 1995 sophistication of commercial products had become so advanced it was an unusual modeler who was interested in building such systems from scratch. Consequently advanced locomotive control is covered historically and in principle, not as how-to with the exception of describing a low-cost way of building an NMRA Standards compatible command-control system. As commercial products come and go, none are covered in detail.
Another change since the preceding edition was increased use of commercial computers on layouts. Initially that was expected to be a major addition for this edition. But, after assembling information, it became obvious there was no consensus among those working in this field. More importantly, to cover adequately different approaches to computer hardware and programming would overwhelm the rest of the Handbook. The complete documentation made available for 1971 CCC alone is several times the size of this book. There is, fortunately, a clear line of demarcation between computers and the circuits to which they connect. It is where computer I/O (Input/Output) meets layout wiring. Everything on the computer side of that line is outside the scope of this edition. For those with interest in computers, this edition was prepared on an Apple Centris using PageMaker 5.0, graphics by Freehand 4.0.
There are extensive cross-references by page number within Volume II and by figure number, chapter, or section to Volume I. References to Volume I will remain valid for any future edition of Volume I. The alphabetical index contained in this volume also covers Volume I by chapter reference.
