Electric Railway, The Carillon Park Books Soft Cover 24 pages
Soft Cover, 24 pages UNDATED
Not so long ago the sun, glinting down on urban America, flashed on spidery tracings of electric trolley wires stretched above the streets and bounced off shiny steel rails drawing their trails through the streets like ski tracks. Simple little single truck cars rocked along the rails taking city folks where they wanted to go. In summer, breezy open cars bowled along filled with families going to the city park for an evening picnic or sweltering city dwellers out for a cool ride in a world that had no air conditioning or electric fans.
In those days the great interurban cars, finely finished with wood paneling, leather seats and separate smoking compartments for gentlemen (no lady ever smoked in public), screeched along miles of tracks from city to city at spine chilling speeds.
Now they are nearly all gone, the interurbans, the electric street cars, displaced in the world of transportation by the rubber footed bus and the automobile, gone into the same shadowy world of antiquity as the horse-cars of an earlier day that they displaced.
Those who are old enough to remember streetcars get a little misty-eyed when they speak of them. Those too young to remember can get a glimpse of the glory that is gone by reading about the romantic era of the horse-cars, the cars that ran by lightning and the "traction" likes. And they can see with their own eyes a handsome old summer car, sitting forever wrapped in memories of a golden day now vanished, in its own private car barn at Carillon Park.
