For so long virtually out of bounds for the independent traveller, the former Soviet satellite states have held a Cinderella status for the Western tourist. Short breaks now advertised to Prague, Warsaw, Berlin or Budapest demonstrate the cultural and historical attraction of these centres. You can now travel by train from the Baltic to the Black Sea and view landscape which has changed little over the years.
There are two immediately obvious advantages to travelling by rail: the new experience which includes people and places, and the unquestionable fact that it is cheap.
From an eastern European perspective, no guilt should be involved in relation to cost because it is recognised that income from tourists is extremely welcome. Above this, you will be impressed with the friendliness and hospitality. Service is another matter. Years of state control have fostered a working philosphy best summed up as 'the state pretends to pay me and I pretend to work'. Patience is a virtue you may need to acquire as simple transactions can take time.
Incomes are lower so many people do not own a car and, therefore, travel by train. It is not unusual for food and drink to be shared and addresses exchanged on the journey. With the collapse of communism, eastern European people are keen to meet Westerners and learn more about the market economy and life in the West, generally.
