EPILOGUE116
The East Broad Top Railroad is unique in a number of ways. It was one of the very early narrow gauge railroads built. It served a long and useful life, along the way becoming the last common carrier slim gauge road east of the Rocky Mountains. Through the vision of Nick Kovalchick, the road was not scrapped when his salvage company acquired it after the line shut down in 1956. Instead, it sat in a state of suspended animation until the summer of 1960 when it was reborn and joined the ranks of the tourist steam railroads.
This volume looks at the last ten years, or so, of regular service operations on the EBT. We have been fortunate to locate a number of sources for the color photos included in this volume. Almost all the photos have never been published. A decision was made to use a few previously published photos to provide as complete coverage as possible of the entire railroad. Despite the road's relatively late closure, it apparently did not manage to attract a lot of folks with color film in their cameras. Luckily, those few that did use color film have allowed us to give the reader a real feel for the railroad and its operations.
