The Post War East Anglian railscene, was, to say the least, intriguing; prospective photographers could enjoy unhindered access to many locations of interest, along the busy main lines and branches.
Motive power and train structure was invariably a mixture of "old" and relatively "new", a "feast" for the select few who ventured out to record a railway about to undergo vast changes.
Frank Church skilfully took advantage of the opportunities offered, and has provided us with a "time capsule" of transport (road and rail) throughout the Eastern Counties during what has often been described as the "Glorious Years". The quality of his work speaks for itself.
In Part Two we again travel the railways of East Anglia, utilising prints taken from the very best of Frank's negatives. Although the main theme is of course trains and their environment, wherever possible scenes have been chosen to reflect day-to-day life and historical detail of the 1950s.
Since publication of Part One, further information regarding captions has been received. I am indebted to the following for their constructive letters.
Richard McLeish of Chelmsford points out on page 2, the B2 (not a B17) is on an "up" train. Class B12 No 61515 is in fact waiting to come off the Southend line.
Mr J. D. Hawkins of York recognised his father-in-law driving No 43937 (a Leicester engine) on page 32. The train is a holiday working from Leicester. The "pilot" loco No 44555 (of Nottingham) had worked eastbound earlier in the day and is returning coupled to the train to save a "light engine" path over single line sections. At Saxby or Melton Mowbray, 44555 would be uncoupled and proceed "light". To confirm this the guard of its outward run is travelling home on the footplate.
