The photograph cannot be under-estimated. Even today with the rapid onset of video it remains a powerful artform with professional and amateur participants.
During the 1950s owning a quality camera was indeed a luxury, the opportunity for serious photography almost impossible in a country still reeling from the effects of war. We are blessed in these islands with our fair share of intrepid "pioneers" who set out against the "odds" to record for posterity the British post war railscene on film during that "magical" period of steam domination that vanished long before most of us realised what was happening. Much of their splendid work has already appeared in print.
East Anglia's railways (often described as the "Cinderella" of the system) suffered greatly in not attracting photographic coverage on the scale of other regions. It is therefore increasingly difficult to unearth high quality material.
We are indebted to Frank Church for taking the initiative in visiting the former G.E., M.& G.N., L.T.S. etc (mostly by motor cycle) during the early "British Railways" period, his camera present to convey wherever possible the "flavour" of rail transport and in many instances life in the "fifties".
The following scenes have been chosen primarily to show the wide variety of steam locomotives working in the Eastern Counties before the British Railways modernisation plan began to take its toll on steam motive power. the passage of time has not dimmed these images of high historical value. Hopefully the detail and "freshness" of Frank's superb photography will satisfy the most discerning enthusiast, and in turn give pleasure to generations of railway lovers.John D. Mann, Frinton-on-Sea, 1987
In order to present these outstanding photographs to full effect, two albums in "landscape" format will eventually become available, building into a collection of over 100 scenes around East Anglia, on main lines and branches.
