FOR the greater part of the last century the role of the news reel and picture supplement was played by the colored lithograph. With garish colors, nacomposition, and almost unfailing charm, lithographers flooded England, France, Germany and America with journalism in pictures-from the early 1800's to the decline of the art in the 8o's, when other methods, other media, crowded them out.
Each country had its own style. England, for instance, liked scenes of quiet and serenity. America liked activity, the pioneer spirit, drama. But all countries sensed the fascination and romance of the Railroad-with its rich and exciting promise of things to come. Again and again they depicted the "iron horse" which had captured everyone's imagination. And in picturing the westward sweep of American rails-print makers wrote a chapter in the building of a nation.
Among American Railroad Prints the great majority are by Currier & Ives, for that firm lasted longest and was most prolific. So great was their nose for news that when it came to a fire or a catastrophe the embers had scarcely burned out or the wounded stopped groaning before the colored prints were in shopkeepers' bins or hung on parlor walls.
It was a sad day for the print makers when General Tom Thumb said to P. T. Barnum, "Those old lithos are out of date. Let's go to Sarong's! He photographs all the big boys." It was the writing on the wall, and an era was almost over.
For many years American Steel Foundries has had a custom of sending its friends calendars illustrated with notable old prints of railroad scenes. Some of the best are gathered together in this book, as a more permanent souvenir of primitive beginnings seeded with greatness.
It is hoped that you will enjoy this collection as a record and reminder . . . and that you will see it as a symbol of the indestructible pioneering spirit of the railroads of America.
