Introduction
The 7th August 1976 is the one-hundredth anniversary of the start of a regular passenger-carrying horse tram service along the Douglas Promenade on the Isle of Man. Unless you have seen the horse trams leisurely ferrying the holidaymakers around Douglas Bay, it is difficult to imagine that the system was forgotten about when most other systems were electrified and again when the motor bus replaced the older forms of transport. Why it was never electrified or closed to make way for motor buses is unimportant, the fact is it is still running, intact, much the same as it was a hundred years ago. A visit to Douglas is like stepping back into the Edwardian era when the horse reigned supreme as the established mode of transport. This book has been written not only to commemorate the Centenary, but also to pay tribute to the many people who have been involved in designing, administering and working the system during its one-hundred-year history. Without them this unique horse tram undertaking would not be running today. Within the early pages of this book a very brief history of the first hundred years is included, followed by a close look at the system today. After reading it, I am sure you will agree, its preservation has given much pleasure to both holidaymaker and enthusiast. Long may it continue to do so.
