PREFACE
In this small pamphlet, made available to the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club through the cooperation of the Denver Posse of the Westerners, the Club is pleased to present the story of a little-known railroad disaster which occurreu at Fountain Colorado, just eighty years ago.
The information about this earth-shaking event was researched and assembled by Colorado Springs physician Dr. Lester L. Williams, a member of the Denver Posse of the Westerners. "Doc" Williams' wide interests encompass not only the health of his fellow man, but also the history of well-known and little-known conflagrations, their causes and results. Arriving in Colorado Springs in 1946 after having received his M.D. at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Doc has practiced medicine in the "Springs" ever since. His membership in the Colorado Springs Fire Department was brought about by special ordinance of the City Council in 1948, and he has also been an honorary member of the Police Department of that City for the past 20 years. His chief aims in life are "to cure people and to put out fires."
