PREFACE
Anyone travelling beyond the Iron Curtain will come across a large variety of railways and tramways, which seem to have remained untouched by the postwar wave of modernisation.
This pictorial album is meant to show many of the interesting features of rail transport in Eastern Germany as it was in the years 1968-1969 and to some extent is unchanged today.
In the presentation of the many different gauges, emphasis has been laid on the local environment rather than on the technical details. It should be noted however, that a photographical survey can be no more than a mere substitute; the real atmosphere can only be experienced by the visitor.
The official East German railway timetable has been used as a guide for the topographical order of the photographs. The country must be seen as a dial around Berlin, where the subjects are logically arranged to begin with the suburbs situated east of the capital.
VORWORT
