This book is the descendant of a long line of publications dealing with the evolution of the diesel locomotive in North America. In the 1995 edition, under a slightly different title and with a different publisher, the book was somewhat handicapped by an outdated format of 5.5x8 inches and, more importantly, by a low standard of photo reproduction. For a book such as this, a high standard of reproduction is essential, for good illustration shows details that are of high importance to readers wishing to examine features mentioned in supporting text and captions. This present edition is printed to a very high standard, in enlarged format, with an upgrade to color illustrations in many instances, as well as greater legibility of supporting text and tables. The text itself has been extensively edited, corrected, enlarged, and clarified.
