RAILWAY AGE's continuing survey of Diesel motive power installations has this year, as in 1958 and 1962, added the "Inventory of Ownership" to give a more comprehensive picture of the Diesel situation.
On January 1, 1967, according to this survey, there were 33,991 Diesel locomotives in service on 439 railroads, including subsidiary roads. Over 55,000,000 horsepower is developed by these Diesels in the United States, Canada and Central America. The fact that a few more railroads are covered in this report than in 1962, in spite of the mergers of a number of railroads, accounts to some extent for the increase in the number of Diesel locomotives reported.
