Of the 4,891 locomotives Conrail inherited from from the eight major component railroads, 204 were EMD cab units represented by six models - F3A, F3B, F7A, F7B, and FP7. They gave the trackside observer one last chance to see streamlined diesel-electric locomotives in action.

In 1954, the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors introduced the "Nine" Series of locomotive models. As with its consumer-oriented automotive business, GM offered railroads a model for all needs. This included a 12-cylinder, 1,200-horsepower end-cab switcher model.

In its rush to dieselize, the PRR bought a wide variety of models from all of the major builders. This included Alco, which supplied the carrier with 495 diesel-electrics between 1947 and 1968. One of the more numerous models was the RS-3, of which 99 joined the Pennsy roster between 1951 and 1955.

Both Bethlehem Steel and U.S. Steel operated iron ore mines in Venezuela; Bethlehem started in 1937 and USS 10 years later. To carry the ore from the mines to the dock, they employed Baldwin road switchers. Later, EMD locomotives joined the USS operations, and today, after nationalization in 1975, the newest
U.S. locomotive designs from both EMD and GE continue to move ore.
