With the nation's railroads looking at all of the locomotive builders to replace steam as quickly as possible, EMD introduced its Seven-series of locomotive designs. Replacing the 1,000-horsepower NW2 end-cab switcher in the catalog was the 1,200-horsepower SW7. In just 16 months, EMD built a total of 490 units for 50 customers.

Looking to dieselize its Wells River Division, CPR selected locomotive models from both Alco and EMD. To handle the through freight service, FA-1s and FB-1s came from Schenectady, while five RS-2s arrived for secondary freight and passenger service. As CPR went on to dieselize other territories, then through freights, additional RS-2s and RS-3s were built by Montreal Locomotive Works using Alco designs. Lasting well into the 1980s, these units were Canada's diesel pioneers.

Before unit coal trains were operating out of Wyoming's Powder River Basin, Union Pacific was handling coal from the Hanna and Rock Springs areas in southern Wyoming.
While the initial output from those mines was consumed by the carrier's steam locomotives, the passage of the Clean Air Act in 1970 spurred renewed interest in these coal fields. Starting with GP9s, UP used a variety of diesel models to power these coal trains.
