Like many American railroads, New York Central found the 1,500-horsepower cab-unit road diesel to be ideally suited to power its freight trains, and between 1947 and 1952, acquired a fleet of 339 EMD-built F units, 293 of which were F7-model units.
43 Lehigh & New England - Dieselizing with AlcosPaul K. Withers
On November 27, 1949, the final run of an L&NE steam locomotive took place - in December of that year, the northeastern-based carrier proudly proclaimed that it was 100 percent dieselized.
