Nearly 20 years ago, a Minnesota-based short line, MN&S, disappeared into the Soo Line system. During 42 years of diesel operation, the carrier used a variety of Baldwins that included the massive DT-6-6-2000 center-cab units and equally rare EMD SD39 locomotives.

With Kodak's recent announcement that it was discontinuing Kodachrome 25 color slide film, it brought to mind the other use of the term around railroads. For a brief period in the mid-1980s, "Kodachrome" also meant locomotives painted for Santa Fe's and Southern Pacific's ill-fated merger proposal.
