Today's trackside image of NS is one of General Electric-built Dash 9s rolling everything from coal drags to hotshot intermodal trains, but not so long ago, 3,900-horsepower brutes - C39-8s - ruled the rails.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of its predecessor, the Electro-Motive Corp., EMD chose one unit of a model that appeared to have a bright future, the GP40-2, and painted it metallic gold. Although overshadowed by its six-axle cousin, the SD40-2, the GP40-2 remained in the EMD catalog longer and sold a respectable 863 units to 24 U.S. and Mexican railroads.

The acquisition of EMD GP3Os in 1962 marked a major shift in GM&O's motive power policies. Long dependent on Alco to supply its locomotive needs, GM&O management conducted a series of cost studies that soon persuaded it that the road's next locomotives should come from La Grange, not Schenectady.

Although L&N had acquired a modest group of these medium-horsepower workhorses new, the fleet more than doubled through mergers and changes in corporate control. Eventually, nearly half of all of the 131 C-420s constructed ran on this southeastern carrier's lines.
