Between 1950 and 1953, B&O took delivery of 59 Alco-built FA-2 and FB-2 cab units. Assigned to the fast-freight Philadelphia-to-Willard, Ohio pool, the 1,600-horsepower cab units remained in this assignment until 1962, when they were replaced by EMD GP30 road-switchers.

While the final Conrail roster featured a fleet of GE-built Dash 8s and GM-designed SD6Os ruling the main line, early in the carrier's brief 23-year existence, the backbone of the locomotive fleet was a group of 167 GM-built SD40-2s.
