In 1967, UP was continuing its search for the ideal high-horsepower, six-axle locomotive. Although its fleet of double diesels met the requirements of the conceptual design, the overall cost of operation was disappointing. After purchasing a number of SD40s, the carrier found them reliable, but horsepower rating was less than what UP was looking for - enter the SD45.
24 Burlington Northern Santa Fe SD7OMACsPaul K. Withers
When we first examined Burlington Northern's SD7OMAC fleet five years ago, the number of locomotives moving coal out of Wyoming's Powder River Basin stood at 380 units. This longtime EMD customer sampled a pair of locomotive models that were a reaction to outside forces - increased competition from long-haul trucking in its Washington-to-Atlanta corridor, and rising oil prices. 42 Boise Locomotive 1999 ReportNorman E. Anderson
As in 1998, key elements in the 1999 business strategy were change and growth, but this took on a new meaning as Boise's parent firm, MotivePower Industries, merged with one of the industry's oldest and best-known suppliers, Westinghouse Air Brake Co. Under Wabtec, the name chosen for the combined company, Boise Locomotive Co. becomes MotivePower Co., but its business remains the same, rebuilding worn-out locomotives and building new workhorses for North American railroads.
