9 Appalachian Streamliners - Clinchfield F Units
After World War II, Clinchfield joined the rest of America's railroads in the
rush to dieselize. New F3s were purchased in 1948, followed by a steady stream of new and secondhand cab units bought to haul coal and general freight over the mountains of Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

Starting with a diverse fleet of 24 switcher models from three different builders, Conrail now owns only five models from one builder, EMD. Of the 216 switchers currently on the roster, 116 are SW1500s of varied backgrounds.

Maroon paint arrived in 1947 on a pair of F3s and highlighted the early years of Soo dieselization - a mixture of switchers, cab units, and road switchers from all the major builders.
