-INTRODUCTION-
From box cabs to super cabs, the diesel locomotive has been dependent upon demonstrators to sell its services. First it was necessary to gain a foothold. Small switchers, that could handle specific assignments more economically than steam goats, were initially accepted. Traditional steam builder American Locomotive Company, in collaboration with electrical supplier General Electric and oil engine manufacturer Ingersoll-Rand, produced the first successful diesel-electric, CNJ 1000. Baldwin, like Alco, dabbled with internal combustion as an extension of its experience with straight electric locomotives, but although both fielded diesel demonstrators and built production models, each concentrated more on its bread and butter product, steam.
During the same period, the success of diesel-powered rail cars, saviors of many a branch line passenger operation, led to the small, flashy, lightweight streamliners of the Thirties. They caught the imagination of the general public-and the attention of operating departments. Those trains were developed by an upstart, the Electro-Motive Corporation, which had no roots in steam, or, for that matter, locomotives.
