Preface to the 3rd Edition
Since the 1968 and 1971 editions of this book were published, the landscape and the technical scene have changed dramatically on the Gotthard. New railway bridges and modern rolling stock are indications of the rejuvenation of the rail traffic installations. Alongside the railway, the motorway is penetrating more and more deeply into the Reuss Valley and is creating a totally new environment across a wide expanse of country.
There have also been developments on the approach lines : serving the Gotthard freight traffic is not the least of the tasks performed by the Heiters-berg line, opened in 1975, and for this reason it has been included in this edition, together with the SchaffhausenZurichZug line. This circumstance has necessitated the renewal of virtually all the illustrations in "The Gotthard Railway" and in this 3rd edition the number of the pictures has been increased from 93 to 308. The historical section has been enriched by the addition of valuable and as yet unpublished material.
The captions and maps have also been revised to bring them into line with the new illustrated section.
All pictures are of the actual item. There may be reflection from the lights in some photos. We try to take photos of any damage.
