This Handbook is a reference manual of the basic information required to design interesting, realistic, and reliable model railroads. One point has been stressed above all others, that a model railroad should be a model of some part of a real railroad, not just a collection of tracks over which trains spin aimlessly. It should be capable of being operated in duplication of the methods the prototype for the mere running of trains does not deliver the full enjoyment possible from this hobby.
It is not intended that this is a book for reading as a pastime. Rather every effort has been made to present the maximum amount of information in the available space. Extensive use has been made of cross references both to avoid wasting space through repetition and also because a figure in one chapter often illustrates a point being made in another chapter.
Design from the smallest to the largest of layouts so far built are covered. Prototype features too large to be modeled are omitted but many examples have been taken from large layouts. The functions of the various tracks are more clearly illustrated on large layouts than on small. Further large layouts tend to have a greater variety of features than do small layouts as the latter are prone to be confined to the most common facilities found on the prototype. Each individual feature of the largest layout can be incorporated on small layouts with some exceptions such as hump yards.
Care has been taken to use precisely the language of the prototype as the author feels the proper terminology is as much a part of the hobby as are the locomotives, cars, and operation of the prototype. Where commonly-used model terms exist which differ from prototype practice, such terms are noted. In particular great effort has been made to avoid errors. If a reader notes any errors or has any suggestions which might improve later editions. please so inform the author.
