Following the success of Brian Haresnape's British Rail 1948-78: A Journey by Design, Ian Allan Ltd decided to publish a new edition of the earlier two-volume Railway Design since 1830 as a single companion book. The two now cover the history of all facets of railway design from 1830 to 1978 giving an invaluable pictorial reference work on British railways.
The period 1830-1960 saw great changes to railways in Britain, horn the beginnings at Rainhill in 1830 to the zenith of steam traction in the days of the 'Big Four. These years saw the rise and decline of numerous railway corn-panics -- some large. some small but each with its own distinctive livery, designs and motive power. The period covered saw the arrival of steam locomotives most loved by enthusiasts, Wainwright 4-4-0s, 'Kings', Midland Compounds. 'Stars'. 'King Arthurs' and 'A4s' - the list is seemingly endless -the great designers. Bulleid. Stanier. Gresley, Maunsell. Collett. Churchward. It was an era that people now look back on with nostalgia -a time when all the trains ran like clockwork and all the stations were well-kept, instructive and friendly.
This book covers the full range of design during the pre-Nationalisation years. both the rolling stock and the fascinating ephemera of rail travel - posters, notices. uniforms and architecture.
