In the last hours of December, 1968, the Pullman Company went out of the railroad sleeping car business after more than 100 years of service to the traveling public. The car listings shown herein were issued by the Pullman Company in 1961 and supplements effective as of June, 1967, begin on page 86. We wish to thank the Pullman Company for supplying the original listing.
This then is a last roundup of named and numbered Pullman cars as they existed in the decade of the 1960s. Many of the cars listed have already been junked and a few have been sold to private collectors. Others are still in service and are operated directly by the few remaining railroads that offer sleeping car accommodations in their dwindling ranks of passenger trains.
It is feared that in a very few years all sleeping cars will have disappeared from active service. Apparently we have become a nation of people without the time or money for the luxury and comfort of a roomette, bedroom, or relaxing drink in the Pullman lounge.
The Pullmans carried on their sides the place names of our American continent Philadelphia County, Pacific Northwest, Deep South or American Fortress! Many have thrilled to watch the car names go by in the darkness at Council Bluffs or New Haven. We hope this list will serve in a small way to recall the majesty that was the Pullman Car.
