In early June 2014, I was reading a U. S. Weather Bureau forecast of a weather front in the Mid-West that produced a strong "derecho" ahead of it. Immediately recognizing the similarity in name with the Norfolk and Western Railway's 1968 subsidiary Dereco, which brought the Erie Lackawanna Railroad and the Delaware and Hudson Railroad into the N&W's sphere of influence. I consulted my Webster's Dictionary, recorded the definition, and sent it to Bob Yanosey as a joke. He contemplated it and determined that a book on the Dereco years could be of interest to fans of the N&W, EL, and D&H.
