The White Viking Fleet
"Palaces Afloat," "The White Viking Fleet," "Sweden's Ambassadors to the Seas" - such were the phrases used to describe the ships of The Swedish American Line.
From the very inception of the Line in 1915, the ships of the Line attracted much attention on both sides of the Atlantic. Not only did they represent the bonds between the old country and the new, they also represented new concepts in service, decor, and furnishings as well as in art and art handicraft.
This book deals primarily with the ships of The Swedish American Line. The pictures here document the elegant saIons and cabins - as well as the plainer cabins and group facilities where Swedish emigrant passengers spent their journeys, during the Line's "childhood."
In 1915, The Swedish American Line represented "the dream of America" and voyages to that country under decent conditions.
By the time the company ceased to exist 60 years later, it had come to mean "ticket-to-paradise" cruises - even for ordinary people - on all the oceans of the world.
Now those ships are gone, but they are still fondly remembered - both in Sweden and in the United States.
