PREFACE
In taking the story of railways back to their very origins the artists and I have had access to a vast amount of contemporary literature, much of it illustrated by very attractive engravings, but naturally lacking entirely in color. And as color is the very essence of this series of books, the difficulties of research have been greater than ever. It is, in fact, these difficulties that have deferred the appearance of this volume, which chronologically should have been first, to fourth in the order. Fortunately, in the meantime much information has come to light, and as the early volumes have been published readers in many parts of the world have been kind enough to write and provide additional material, and sometimes to enquire why certain areas seem to have escaped our attention. It will now be possible to fill in some of the obvious gaps, notably concerning Japan, in the remaining volumes of the series by exercising a little elasticity in the prescribed dates.
In the present volume I am very grateful to Mr. John H. White, a leading authority on the early history of the steam locomotive in the U.S.A., for his advice and help, though it must be recorded that all authorities do not agree over the vital matter of color. There are disagreements, over items far nearer home, but we hope that, all in all, we have succeeded in giving a representative picture of the early and fascinating period. It is surprising in what unexpected places items of great historical interest are revealed. Just at the time when this particular volume was being compiled some friends in the U.S.A. took me to see that they term a 'grade crossing'-a crossing of two single-line railways on the level, where there was not only a surviving specimen of one of the old 'Highball' signals, but it was still in use, in the year of Grace 1971! Some interesting examples of North American signalling practice, so different from that of Great Britain, arc in readiness for the next volume of this series.
