In the second half of the nineteenth century, steam-powered trains represented the epitome of speed and power. They tied the continent together after the Civil War and made the settlement of the prairies and the West possible. Beneath their decorative Victorian exteriors they were carefully engineered and rugged machines. The train depicted in this book has passenger and freight cars typical of those in use in the middle and later nineteenth century. The engine is an American "Standard" 4-4-0. Approximately 25,000 engines of this type were built after the Civil War. Many are still preserved in railroad museums across North America.
