Private developers started transit service in Chicago in 1859. Successful at first, they were ultimately driven out of business by rising costs, changing demographics, competition of automobiles, and overregulation. Public ownership was adopted In 1947 when Chicago Transit Authority, using revenue bond money, bought up the lines, funding service solely from user charges. In the 1970s some public money from city, state and federal sources began to support area-wide transit. Still, in 1993 public transit nationwide, particularly its oldest components, again faced a major crisis. Highlights of this process are recalled here. Profusely illustrated, this is a book for the Chicagc history or transit buff.
