ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Trains have played an integral part in the life of Charles Grattan Price, Jr., a "self-confessed railroad nut since the age of two." Born in Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1919, he was raised with the railroad in the family: his father's first job was as a water boy for the construction of the Chesapeake Western Railway's predecessor in 1895, and an uncle worked as a civil engineer to locate the railroad's route. Grattan himself was allowed to run his first locomotive at age twelve, and made twenty-three cents per hour painting a bridge and the railroad's switch targets over summer vacations.
