At last, a (reasonably) comprehensive field guide for small US-made gas & Diesel locomotives. And not a moment too soon. In a world where bigger is always better, and rubber running on asphaltic macadam nearly always beats steel on steel, locomotives of under 100 tons seem to be a vanishing breed.
For use as a field guide, this book ought to prove useful for 98% of what you might still find, out in the "wilds". For help in identifying locomotives in photographs, this guide ought to prove better than 80% helpful, unless you are working with an incredible collection.
One distinct hazard of indentifying small locomotives, is that these builders were, or are, ever ready to build custom designs (more so with Brookville, Davenport or Plymouth, less so with GE or Porter), so one must keep a flexible mind when viewing a locomotive that doesn't quite fit with the photos or descriptions found in this book. Also, while most identifying features of larger locomotives are found on the hood, small locomotive enthusiasts will want to pay much attention to the frame as well. Since small locomotives are more prone to substantial alteration, and the hood is one of the first things to go, the frame is often the only substantial component remaining. Being made of relatively heavy castings or plates, the frame is the last component that the self-styled locomotive surgeon attempts to alter.
While the book project is finally finished, the study of critters, dinkys and centercabs continues. To this end, I encourage anyone that can further this field of study to share their knowledge, photos or small locomotive catalogs.
