The Canadian Pacific Railway is unusual
among the ranks of North American Class I
railroads in that the railroad as it appears
today is virtually unchanged from the CPR
of November 7, 1885. All of the other large
North American railroads have been created
by merger (except for the Santa Fe). The
CPR of 1993 has begun to reach out of its
traditional Canadian transcontinental
route with the purchase in 1989 of the remaining shares of Soo Line and purchase of the assets of the bankrupt Delaware & Hudson Railroad in 1990. These acquisitions are marketed as the "CP Rail System," but as of January 1, 1993 Soo Line and D&H have not been physically merged into CP Rail and still maintain separate locomotive and equipment fleets. To show the CP Rail ownership, Soo Line locomotives began to appear with decals proclaiming "Proud to be part of CP Rail System." Beginning in April 1993 CP, Soo Line and D&H locomotives began to appear wearing CP Rail System's new unified "dual flag" paint scheme.
