DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION:
For many years, Cotton Belt traffic moving south from the St. Louis and Memphis gateways has been funneled onto the Southern Pacific at Corsicana, Texas, by the Blue Streak Merchandise and other hotshots. Also, SP's share of the Dallas/Fort Worth freight is handled through Ennis Yard and Corsicana. Tunnel motors and GP40-2's, B23-7's and U33C's, most everything on the Cotton Belt roster of road units worked Corsicana and the Ennis Subdivision in the 1980's. In addition, solid Cascade green Burlington Northern engine consists wheeled the 100-plus cars of SATX coal trains down the Ennis Sub from Fort Worth toward San Antonio. Add to this the leisurely, backwoods wandering of the afternoon freight on the Cotton Belt to Waco, normally operated with power built in 1965 or earlier, and you have some interesting Texas railroading. Have a good look at an overlooked area of the American rails!
On the cover... Nearly twelve thousand Southern Pacific and Cotton Belt horses are grinding upgrade into Midlothian, Texas, at something around 20 miles per hour, bound for Ennis with a Fort Worth Turn. The three General Electric B23-7's and the two Electro-Motive GP35's have less than a mile to go to reach the crest of this particular grade, which occurs at the Espee's crossing of the Santa Fe's Dallas-Cleburne line. February 1983.
