Conrail is one of America's "Super Seven" railroads--the seven lines that boast the most mileage and the largest revenues. Members of this elite group include Burlington Northern, Union Pacific, Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, Norfolk Southern, CSX, and Conrail.
Just a decade ago, many observers doubted that Conrail would remain a permanent part of this nation's rail map. While the fortunes of the other super railroads had long been secure, Conrail's future was uncertain at best. The events leading to the formation of the federally-owned Conrail, as well as the company's first years of existence, are related in words and pictures in the first volume of this set.
The early 1980's brought Conrail's first profits and the promise of a brighter future as Congress moved to deregulate railroads and CR was permitted to dispose of its money-losing commuter operations. Nevertheless, the Reagan administration kept busy in its attempts to sell off the government's giant railroad.
The politics and business maneuvers that returned Conrail to the private sector as a strong, profitable, and independent railroad are all described in Chapter 1 of this book.
Today's Conrail is divided into six large divisions. Chapters 2 through 7 examine each of these areas in detail during the 1983-1990 period. Attempts have been made to include photographs of most of Conrail's main lines, branch lines, and secondary tracks. To accomplish this goal, photographers from throughout CR's extensive service area have been enlisted to provide the illustration that accompanies these chapters. This book relies on the efforts of these photographers, and the project would have been impossible without their help.
Once again, my sincere thanks are extended to Railpace's Denis E. Connell and Tom Nemeth for their uncountable hours of hard work: Denis recruited the many photographers from throughout North America, and Tom designed and laid out this book. In addition, I am grateful to David P. Oroszi and Don Jilson for reviewing portions of the manuscript. The commentary in TRAINS Magazine by editors David P. Morgan and J. David Ingles, and George H. Drury's The Historical Guide to North American Railroads (Kalmbach Books, 1985) have provided important details in the research of Conrail's story. Finally, I wish to thank my wife, Ann Flesor, for her patience and support during this time-consuming project.
