CONRAIL POWER 1-1976 came out just prior to the first unit being completely repainted into the new logo and paint scheme. We reported in CONRAIL POWER I what the colors were to be. Also in that edition were the first pictures of Conrail's efforts in the way of Bicentennial units.
Since that date a year ago, the motive power picture on Conrail has been colorful to say the least. Besides the power of those roads put together to create Conrail, motive power from the Canadian National, Southern Pacific, Precision National, Union Pacific, Missouri Pacific, Chicago Eastern Illinois, Chicago & Northwestern, Burlington Northern, Bangor & Aroostook, Pittsburgh & Shawmut, Southern all were on lease to Conrail. Units from other roads like: ATSF, L&N, RF&P, ICG, DT&I, TP&W, D&H, and N&W operated on Conrail lines in pool service or run through operations.
The motive power situation on Conrail has been critical all year and rarely a day went by that trains didn't have to be cut for lack of power. In March of this year, It was announced that 175 new locomotives would be ordered for delivery this summer and fall. As of mid-April, 168 units had been retired since the formation of Conrail and another 99 have been set aside for retirement in the coming months.
Paint schemes even with the new logo have not been uniform. 1977 may be the last year of much of the pre-Conrail paint schemes, since many of those units scheduled for rebuilding, major maintenance, etc. are former LV, EL, Reading units. Conrail estimates by year's end, over half the motive power fleet will have went through a renewal process.
Conrail dropped in 1976 the use of the former Penn Central method of locomotive classification and began to use the builder model class as the basic system.
As in the first edition of CONRAIL POWER, we have followed a numerical sequence for listing the largest motive power fleet of any railroad in the United States.
