For Conrail's locomotive fleet, the period from 1986 to 1991 has brought additional purchases of modern, fuel-efficient, microprocessor-equipped road units, and additional retirements of older road, yard, and road-switcher types. It has also brought the first engines into service with air-conditioned cabs, the General Electric C40-8W "super cab" wide-nose units.
The period also has seen a continuing trend toward better utilization of motive power, a point underscored by the fact that Conrail now operates with less than half of the nearly 5,000-unit fleet it started with in 1976. This process, called "fleet sizing," uses empirical formulas and computer-supplied information to match the roster size and complexion to the average demand on a daily and weekly basis. One of the results is less locomotive layover time at terminals and a greater output of work per day per unit than under the Penn Central method, which was, by comparison, haphazard at best.
