INTRODUCTION
This book in the series about the Connecticut River Railroads and Connections, centers around Bellows Falls, Vermont, and electric line that either passed through or radiated from it. We stray but little to the Vermont Valley days nor to the Cheshire Railroad but for the most part stay within the 20th Century with emphasis from about 1925 on to the present, exclusive of the electric line to Saxtons River.
Again, like Volume I, this is more a pictorial than a history book of words. More like a history book with photos, sketches, and maps. We do not go into any great length with either the Rutland or Green Mountain railroads as they have been covered before either by others or me. As before, this book does get into freight and passenger operations to some degree. Fact is, each volume will have some operations in it.
Since writing Volume I, Lloyd Kenyon, former B&M Conductor, has come forth with information on the derailment shown on page 142 in that volume. It happened on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend when Train 7055 hit a washout caused by a cloudburst. This was northbound of course. Lloyd is giving signals in the second from the top right-hand photo.
There is a slight correction in the forthcoming Volume III. This volume will be strictly the Main Line, Bellows Falls thru White River Jct. and will include the Boston & Maine's White River Jet. Yard. Not the Central Vermont's Yard. It also will include the Springfield Terminal Railway's electric as well as diesel operations. So much material and information have come to light on the Claremont Branch that it will be covered in a book by itself and will be Volume IV. This will be a bit more complete than the first three volumes as it will have a more in-depth study of its industries, operations and a bit of real history. It still will be loaded with photos, maps, sketches, timetables, etc., and be as complete as time and resources will allow. Also in Volume III, there will be a page or two more on Brattleboro which I feel quite certain will be enjoyed by all. It is not my intent to do this with every book unless I come across very exceptional material. It also is not my intention to put together an addendum. Volume III also will include a section of 51 good, clear photos taken from the cab of a northbound and southbound passenger job, Holyoke to WRJ and return. I realize we have strayed a bit south but only 3 or 4 photos are south of Deerfield Jet. Without a doubt you will be quite pleased with this group of photos. See you then.
