INTRODUCTION
We have reached what appears to be the final book in this series of the Connecticut River Railroads and Connections. What had started out to be 4-6 books blossomed to 10 plus a plan book of the St.J. & L.C. RR. I must admit that in most cases, it has been a very enjoyable project.
This volume covers the Montpelier and Wells River, Barre and Chelsea, Washington County and Central Vermont Railway which includes any and all stations between Montpelier Jet. and Wells River, Vt. It also includes the "Hill" operations near Barre as well as the many quarries associated with that operation.
As usual, I have tried to show as many industry views as I was able to obtain along with a narrative of the freight operations.
Woodsville, N.H. operations and views have been expanded upon with over 9 pages on this alone with an excellent valuation map of the track diagram.
The Boston and Maine and consequent smaller carriers, are covered between Woodsville and Concord. (Concord itself was covered in Volume IX.) Here again, most of the stations are shown as well as what industry views could be found. Many side track diagrams are represented, particularly in the Laconia area.
Freight operations are covered similar to my prior volumes with the passenger and milk portion being left to a visual account with photos and schedules. Unfortunately, interruptions are a part of railroading and they too are included (Derailments, etc.).
The smaller carriers that have come on board since the sale of the line between Concord and Lincoln, are also included along with a short history of the "Pemi." (The State of N.H. purchased that section on February 6, 1976.) Some 20 or more pages are devoted to these short line carriers and excursion operations.
The "Pemi" along with the East Branch and Lincoln RR, take up some 66 pages of this book. 41 pages of those are for the mill at Lincoln as well as the woods operation of the EB&L. A fine map of the mill and tracks at Lincoln are included within the book.
All in all, I think for what is probably the final book of this series, this has done the job well and does close out the series with what I feel is giving the series a good ending. (Another case where the book "felt good" going together.) You are all probably aware that I lay out and design my own books, with the exception of my first on the Green Mountain RR. From the letters and notes I have received, it would appear to have satisfied most of you. Many, many thanks for your support. (Most of the Rutland series are still available and some of the Conn. River series.)
What appears to be my final book(s) on the Central New England Railway, should be well along by the time this volume is available to you. There will be history and accounts of the lines that made up that line until the New Haven RR complete takeover in 1927. Industries, diagrams, sketches, maps, schedules, etc. My usual style of book (plus script) will be found in it (or them). This has been "my" railroad since I was old enough to know anything about railroads. I only hope I do it justice.
Again! Thank you all for your support in my past ventures. Through it I have made many new friends, which would indicate I filled a void in railroad history. So be it.
