Composite Product Review Index 102 pages. Spiral bound
Composite Product Review Index 102 pages. Spiral bound. One spiral is bent and out of place.
Fellow Modeler,
This composite index has been compiled from the pages of MODEL RAILROADER magazine's Trade Topics and Hobby shop Window
(1946-1982), and RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN's
Test Track, Ready Track, and Loco Builders Photos (1952-1982) columns. It features the reviewed products of over 1400 manufacturers, suppliers, and distributors- many no longer in business-whose products nonetheless, are still available at some hobbyshops , flea markets, and conventions, and through magazine ads. As old-timers are aware, these products made a significant contribution to the hobby by advancing the state-of-the-art, and as such, were the forerunners of the many fine products available today.
This valuable reference library addition has been designed to complement the serious modeler's collection of MR's and RMC's, or those available to him at his club or local library, in that:
(1) many of us purchase items as they become available, knowing that they are frequently unavailable later. In many cases we store them until the appropriate time or opportunity presents itself. As we read the instructions, it helps to be able to refer promptly to an expert's evaluation of that product, to see where he encountered any problems and what he did to resolve them, how he finished the product, where he modified it, and any recommendations he might have had.
(2) it will assist the modeler in selecting which products to buy, as well as aid in comparison shopping of available products.
(3) it will ease the modeler's building or using the no-longer-available products he invariably picks up for nostalgia's sake at railroad flea markets or white elephant sales, and,
(4) referral to reviews will frequently suggest substitutions/additions of other products to enhance the quality of his completed project.
I have organized the directory alphabetically by manufacturer, distributor, and/ or supplier. In the case of large importer/ distributors such as AHM or PFM, products have been listed under these better-known names, rather than RIVAROSSI or TENSHODO.
As can be readily seen, a manufacturer's reviewed products are listed below the firm name on the left side of each column of the 2 column-per-page format; while on the right, under 2 narrow magazine identification sub-columns for MR and RMC, are the month, year, and page number designation. In the interest of simplicity and space conservation, I have used a number of abbreviations and coding to describe the product.
I have made no attempt to categorize whether the item is made of wood, paper/cardstock, styrene/plastic, die-cast metal, or a combination of these materials. Abbreviations which might be confusing, follow these introductory pages. Listings may also include a manufacturer's product number, and are helpful in identifying similar items.
Products are not listed chronologically as they were reviewed in the magazines; rather they have been grouped by like item, thereby enabling the user to locate information more quickly. They have been listed generally into 4 sub-category groupings of: motive power, rolling stock, structures, and miscellaneous. An extensive listing, i.e. one more than a half-column or so in length, actually contains these sub-headings to separate the product line into more manageable proportions.
Some modelers may question my inclusion of MR's Hobbyshop Window and RMC's Ready Track and Loco Builders Photos in the index. To be sure, they are short, sweet, and include a picture; but they don't have the detail of MR's Trade Topics or RMC's Test Track. I thought long and hard about this; in the final analysis, if I wanted to produce a complete Product Review Index and advertise it as such, these features had to be included. I couldn't justify including a full-column review on one firm's trucks or loco detailing parts, and leaving out the same or similar items, just because they appeared in a shorter feature.
I sincerely hope you will find the single-source COMPOSITE PRODUCT REVIEW INDEX to be of great assistance to you, and that it will ease the research end of your model-building projects.
