DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Since the birth of the railroads in the early Industrial Age, people across the world have been fascinated by the locomotive as an enduring symbol of the advance of technology and as a powerful means of transport. From the early beginnings of steam power to today's awe-inspiring high-speed passenger trains, The Complete Book of Locomotives spans nearly two centuries of locomotive development worldwide in an easy-to-use format that will appeal to every railway enthusiast. Divided into three sections, the book is organized chronologically, documenting developments and innovations in a concise and authoritative text.
Part One: The Birth of the Railways charts the very beginnings of locomotive design up to 1900. Starting with the British locomotives of the 1830s and the Battle of the Gauges, it moves on to the early North American freight trains and the great building schools across the world.
Part Two: The Golden Age of Steam details the early British innovations in steam; the American Mikados, Shays, Switchers and Record Breakers; the early Canadian freight trains; European mountain power; and the enduring steam locomotives of India and Latin America - many of which were in use until recently.
Part Three: The 1950s to the Present Day explains the crossover from steam to diesel and electric. It looks at how these changes transformed the locomotive throughout the world into a superior passenger and freight pulling power, making it the supreme form of transport. Bringing us to the present day, this last section highlights the latest developments in world-class locomotive technology, including Europe's Eurostar and the Japanese bullet train.
