INTRDUCTION
This story began on a wind swept station platform back in 1975. The actual date is lost to history, although it was probably a blustery April evening. Commuter trains and the like would glide to a stop and exchange passengers. Through freights joined the parade, hauled by SD40's and 45's. You might ask the location. Was it Des Plaines, Elmhurst or even Waukegan? No, sorry, nothing could be further from the truth. It was at MetroPark station in Woodbridge, NJ on Penn Central's Northeast Corridor! My good freind, Dave Hutchinson and I came here for a bit of atmosphere while we discussed our upcoming vacation. Both of us had decided to turn our backs on girlfriends, work and everyday life and treat ourselves to a real vacation getaway. Both of us had two weeks available and our meeting focused on possible destinations. The common thought for this discussion centered on what, of interest, was not going to be around next year, or what was in danger of imminent change.
The Common denominator always crept back to Fairbanks-Morse road switchers and in particular, two locations. Southern Pacific was still running its Train Masters out of San Francisco in passenger service and the Chicago & North Western was still hauling ore with the smaller version in Upper Wisconsin. Decisions, decisions. C&NW won out for a number of reasons, such as being closer, ie: cheaper, and with a greater variety of subjects to photograph while journeying to see the FM's. We booked passage to Chicago on Amtrak's "Broadway Limited" for early July and eagerly awaited the day.
Dave had been to Chicagoland while he was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Base north of town, although never in the official capacity of a railfan. I had fled west to Scranton once! Enough said.
The first indication of new horizons started as we pulled into Chicago's Union Station and observed a BN "E" unit out our port windows. Settled in a rented car and armed with a local street map, we were off. One stop we made was at Waukegan, IL to shoot the C&NW commuter power laying over, as well as whatever the EJ&E had to offer. It did take a minute or two to accept bilevel coaches and "E" units without number boards, but we did manage. Left hand running, still to this day, seems unnatural. As we walked down the road leading to the "J's" engine terminal, to photograph the only loco in the yard (an SD-38), we were stopped by an individual in a station wagon who spotted the cameras. In a brief conversation, we spoke of our quest and were greeted with a horizontally shaken head. "Forget It, the North Western put those FM's in storage two weeks
