May 25, 2006, marked a momentous day on Colorado's Georgetown Loop narrow gauge tourist railroad as Colorado & Southern No. 9 arrived back on the property following a two-year long restoration to operating condition. The then 122-year-old locomotive, a veteran of the Denver, South Park & Pacific and Colorado & Southern narrow gauge lines, last ran at the Chicago Railroad Fair in 1949. Its return to operation marked the first time that a locomotive originally used on the line would see service on the rebuilt Georgetown Loop.
No. 9's time in the spotlight was to be briefer than expected as the locomotive ran for only part of the 2006 season before its fire was dropped. One Short Season is the story of No. 9's restoration and the reasons
behind its all too brief return to operation. No. 9 is now displayed under a shelter in Breckenridge, Colorado, on the very right of way that it once travelled between Denver and Leadville.
